Boulder Media are an award-winning Animation Studio full of some of the world’s best 2D & 3D Animators, Artists and Designers who create worlds that capture the viewer’s imagination. Capturing this unique element was the key concept, with Lafferty working hand in hand with Boulder in a fully collaborative design process. Initially, a series of key feature walls were selected and given over to Boulder’s staff, who created a unique animation for each wall. The animations then informed each space’s colour and material palette. Each meeting room is designed and named based on a character from a Production.
Originally a start-up company, Boulder have experienced outstanding success and growth. However, they wished to retain the Studio’s vibrant and spirited start-up ethos. This was reflected in a light industrial look and feel, with large area of exposed services and raw industrial materials.
Spatial programming was organised into neighbourhoods for each Animation Team generally consisting of 25 to 50 staff working on a single production. ‘Pod’ meeting rooms break up each neighbourhood, while also providing a small meeting room to discuss and review animations. The exterior walls of each Pod is made of pinnable and writeable surfaces to foster collaboration at the heart of each neighbourhood and encourage the display of new ideas and artwork. The Central Breakout Area, Canteen & Town Hall, Games Room and Courtyard form the beating heart of the scheme, located in the centre of the building on the ground floor.
